Baltimore 2017

Belated thanks to Ged for organising this again. We were all disappointed that you were unable to join us.
After a cracking trip in 2015, we decided to return.
Baltimore is on the most southerly of Ireland's toes in County Cork, and is a beautiful place. As before, the accommodation and skipper were excellent, and the whole group were great company. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the usual daily routine involves 2 dives and a leisurely lunch on Cape Clear or Sherkin Island.
The diving
John is in between boats, and so had temporary use of a boat. Unfortunately the boat isn’t really designed for diving, with a poor deck layout and a ladder that is one or two steps shorter than we’d like. After a chaotic first day, Jane and Tim bullied us in to order, and we got organised, and made it work.
The weather was disappointing so we were unable to get to Mizen Head or to the Fastnet Rock. We lost one day due to windy conditions, and on other days we tucked in the lee of Cape Clear and Sherkin Island and also Kedge Rock. The high spot for me was that I finally got on the Kowloon Bridge. The Kowloon Bridge was a 200,000-ton tanker, and now lies between 8 to 40 metres, and is covered in life. The cargo of iron ore was scattered around.
Other dives included the wrecks of the Illryan, Alondra, Dido and La Rochelle, plus scenic dives at Gascane Sound and Kedge Rock. Mandy & Jan managed a drift dive in Lough Hyne, though the rest of us were too late and the tide had already turned.
